Sequels are hard to get right, and Guilty Gear 2: Overture is no exception. Should you do something totally different, should you copy the original or do both at the same time?
Evidently, the guys at Arc Systems Works decided on the latter.
Eric Qualls at About.com, hoped the sequel would take advantage of the opportunity to flesh out the Gear universe, but ?instead of drawing you into the world it just makes you confused,? he wrote.
While Overture introduces new characters that are hard to like, it?s missing some characters whose presence would have kept Qualls more interested.
Dale Nardozzi at teamxbox.com appreciates the new 3D look, but it?s only for Guilty Gear fanatics. Delivering his own death blow, Nardozzi writes that Overture is in the middle of the pack when compared to other 3D action games and suffers from weak post-production effects made worse by too much depth-of-field blur.
Brett Todd at gamespot.com has little good to say, too, writing that anyone who hasn?t memorized the action of Guilty Gear won?t have a clue what?s happening. Combining beat-?em up action with tactics is a great idea but the tactical layer is so thin it can nearly be ignored, he wrote.
Reviewbusters.net had little good to say, either. ?I really don?t know what kind of game this is,? the anonymous reviewer wrote, adding that Overture tarnishes the Guilty Gear game. Ouch!
Ryan Scott at 1up.com, rated Overture a C minus, comparing it to the movie Halloween III, writing that it will leave you scratching your head.
Let?s hope Arc Systems Work has better luck on its future releases.
