In case you are not familiar with the original Guilty Gear game, it was released in 1998 for the original PlayStation console. Although it has a wide variety of unique characteristics, the easiest way to explain the Guilty Gear game to someone who has never seen or played it before is that it is set in a similar two dimensional fashion like King of Fighters or Street Fighter.

Since it may have been quite some time since you have played the Guilty Gear game, I thought you would enjoy getting a summary of the characters who are in this truly interesting game:

Chipp Zanuff: As a result of struggling to live on the streets of America, Chipp Zanuff was once a drug trafficker

Dr. Baldhead: Losing a girl during a surgery caused this doctor to become a cold blooded killer

Kliff Undersn: The character responsible for adopting Testament

Ky Kiske: Ky Kiske fights with the Thunderseal sword and with his lightning magic

May: A funny fact about May is that she has a fear of bald people and can sense them from a distance

Millia Rage: Millia Rage lost both of her Russian parents when she was quite young

Potemkin: One of Potemkin’s hobbies is drawing

Sol Badguy: A bounty hunter who has been around for over a hundred and fifty years

Zato-1: As a result of problems with Millia Rage, Zato-1 loathes women

Testament: Two of Testament’s favorite foods are pudding and potatoes

Justice: Justice was the original Commander Gear

Baiken: Hidden character who’s weapon of choice is the katana

Guilty Gear 2: Overture

Filed under: Guilty Gear - 30 Jun 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Sequels are hard to get right, and Guilty Gear 2: Overture is no exception. Should you do something totally different, should you copy the original or do both at the same time?

Evidently, the guys at Arc Systems Works decided on the latter.

Eric Qualls at About.com, hoped the sequel would take advantage of the opportunity to flesh out the Gear universe, but ?instead of drawing you into the world it just makes you confused,? he wrote.

While Overture introduces new characters that are hard to like, it?s missing some characters whose presence would have kept Qualls more interested.

Dale Nardozzi at teamxbox.com appreciates the new 3D look, but it?s only for Guilty Gear fanatics. Delivering his own death blow, Nardozzi writes that Overture is in the middle of the pack when compared to other 3D action games and suffers from weak post-production effects made worse by too much depth-of-field blur.

Brett Todd at gamespot.com has little good to say, too, writing that anyone who hasn?t memorized the action of Guilty Gear won?t have a clue what?s happening. Combining beat-?em up action with tactics is a great idea but the tactical layer is so thin it can nearly be ignored, he wrote.

Reviewbusters.net had little good to say, either. ?I really don?t know what kind of game this is,? the anonymous reviewer wrote, adding that Overture tarnishes the Guilty Gear game. Ouch!

Ryan Scott at 1up.com, rated Overture a C minus, comparing it to the movie Halloween III, writing that it will leave you scratching your head.

Let?s hope Arc Systems Work has better luck on its future releases.

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Bridget is a character in the Guilty Gear fighting game series. Guilty Gear is subtitled, The Missing Link, and is developed by ArcSystem Works. It was first released in 1998 for the PlayStation and is a popular game amongst all age groups. It currently has newly released versions of the video games, CDS, and novels that explain the history of the characters and the story line.

Even though Bridget has a female name and image, Bridget is actually a male. According to the storyline, he was a twin. Both the twins were males and they lived in a village where it was considered bad luck to birth twins of the same gender. For this reason, his family gave him a female name and raised him as a girl. As Bridget became older, he decided that he would become a bounty hunter in order to prove his strength and masculinity while redefining himself. In the story, I-No gives him a false list of bounties and he fights against several of the other fighters. He ends up fighting with a yo-yo and a mechanical teddy bear.

Later in Guilty Gear XX, he catches bounties Dizzy and May and feels at this time that he has finally proven his manhood. He then leaves bounty hunting altogether and makes friends with Jellyfish Pirates and May. After leaving bounty hunting, he decides to pursue a career as an entertaining and unsuccessfully attempts to recruit Venom and I-No. In the end, he returns to his native village where he finds that his brother is missing and something has happened to his mother and father. The story line ends with Bridget setting out on a new mission to find his brother. There is an alternate ending in the Jam Story Mode where he finishes the game as a waiter in a restaurant.

Guilty Gear Characters

Filed under: Guilty Gear - 06 Apr 2010  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

When Guilty Gear made its debut on PlayStation in 1998, the game featured ten playable characters and three non-playable characters. Now the game series includes over forty playable characters and over twenty non-playable characters. Playable characters not mentioned in the previous post include: A.B.A., Anji Mito, Ansect, Axl Low, Bridget, Dizzy, Dr. Paradigm, Eddie, Fanny, Gig, Goose, I-No, Izuna, Johnny, Judgment, Jam Kuradoberi, Leopaldon, Order-Sol, Ra-Ki, Robo-Ky, Robo-Ky Mk. II, S-Lord, S-Watt, Sin, Slayer, Valentine, Venom, Zako-dan, and Zappa. Some of the characters are clearly based on rock music references from the last half of the last century, including Axl Rose from Guns’n'Roses and Eddie the Head, the mascot of Iron Maiden.

The growing cast of characters makes the Guilty Gear game series more complex and challenging. Axl Low is a time traveler from the 20th century, one of the orignal Guilty Gear game characters. Throughout his travels across time and his battles against, and alliances with, other characters, Axl’s lifelong goal is to return to his own time to be reunited with Megumi, his girlfriend. A.B.A first appeared in Guilty Gear Isuka, as an artificial life form created by a scientist who is taken away before he can help her to understand her real purpose for being. She has to learn about life and its purpose on her own and has a fascination with collecting keys, since they represent to her some kind of magical portals to other places. Anji Moto, kept imprisoned by the government to protect his pure Japanese blood line, first appeared in Guilty Gear X. Ansect is an insect-like creature who first appears in Guilty Gear Judgment. More descriptions of characters will follow in the coming posts.

Guilty Gear

Filed under: Guilty Gear - 14 Jul 2009  | Spread the word !

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Arc System Works released the inaugural video game in the Guilty Gear series for PlayStation in 1998 (it was designed by Daisuke Ishiwatari). Its immediate success justified adding eight other incarnations in the decade since. Guilty Gear has been aptly named to the Top 10 Weirdest Combat Games of All Time List, compiled by Game Informer. The setting for the game is the year 2180, in a mystical world, and the story is focused on global war.

Guilty Gear does not bore the player with a lengthy back-story, but gets right to the action. Single combat, with the winner determined by a best of two of three bouts, is the preferred action format.

All the games in the Guilty Gear series use a 6-function layout to control the character action, with several specialized “Chaos” and “Murder” kill techniques added to defeat opponents. The ten main characters and three hidden characters of Guilty Gear offer the player many choices of play style.

Several spin-offs, such as novels and drama CDs, about Guilty Gear have appeared in the past ten years, which have provided a richer history and alternative story lines to the main video game series.

Guilty Gear 2: Overture, released in October 2008 for all three of the hottest video game platforms, ups the ante by providing a slew of opportunities for multi-player combat. The lead player can fight side by side with his servants, or call on a small army which he can command. This latest release in the series is proof that the next decade of Guilty Gear can only get better.

If you have never played Guilty Gear before, you should pick up a copy today because you definitely won’t be disappointed with this game.
